Tanjung Piai

Last weekend, I’ve visited a few of my relatives near Johor Bahru. The major difference from the previous trip is that I visited the Southernmost tip of the mainland Asia – Tanjung Piai.

When visiting this place, the first thing that came into my mind is Everglade National Park and the Southernmost Point in Key West in Florida. Tanjung Piai is more or less like the combination of these two places, plus it is very near the equator and truely tropical (geographical coordinate: 1" 16.00’N 103” 30.46′). Tanjung Piai is national park that is situated in Mukim Serkat, and about 90 km from Johor Bahru’s city center. Tanjung Piai offers a great scenic view of the Straits of Malacca. Tanjung Piai, one of the largest mangrove habitats in the world, is also the home to many different species of birds, beady-eyed mudskippers, multi-coloured mangrove crabs, and crab-eating macaques. Also found here is the tree-climbing and scavenging macaque monkeys.

This is the first time I ever realized that the Southernmost tip of the mainland Asia is located in Malaysia. But, the first question that you might ask is… isn’t Indonesia located "more South" than Malaysia? They are actually looking only at the "mainland" of Asia. If you look at the map carefully, they don’t even count the island of Singapore into the "mainland".

Well, visited 2 "Southernmost" recently – another one was the US’s Southernmost Point in Keywest visited the end of last year. Now, I’m truely the "Southernmost" visitor =) Hopefully some day I can visit the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, or the Cape Horn in South America. Anymore "Southernmost"?
