Gas Leak Causes Furnas Fire [

A fire on the fifth floor of Furnas Hall prompted an evacuation and emergency response after a gas line ignited in a lab.
According to UB Chief of Police Gerald Schoenle, the building was not damaged and no one was hurt.
"They were changing a cylinder out in one of their labs, and gas leaked in the line and ignited," Schoenle said.
According to a police officer at the scene, the fire was "just an experiment that got out of hand."
"I guess there was a small fire on the fifth floor," said Carlos Gonzalez, a junior chemical engineer who works in the hall.
"A faculty member told me the fire happened while they were doing a lab, and they pulled the fire alarm before they tried to put the fire out," Gonzalez said.
Because there was gas involved, extra measures were being taken to ensure the building was safe before re-entry, according to Schoenle.
"There was never any threat of danger to people in the building," he said. "This story had a happy ending."
