This is a real encounter that I must share with you all. What would you say or/and do if you are faced with this situation? It happened around 6:30pm at my residence in Puchong just now (30th April).
A young thin dark chinese guy dressed in black t-shirt was calling out at the gate, "Hello, hello!" So I stood from inside and asked him what he wanted. He said he’s here to do a survey about opening a hypermarket in this area and asked me a few questions.
Stranger: Which supermarket do you normally go to? How is the parking there? How much do you spend each in one month? Do you pay using cash or credit card?
I was giving him fake answers just to entertain him. After that he thanked me and said I was entitled to a mystery gift and I needed to select a packet from many green packets that he has in his hand. He said in most cases it would be a "terima kasih" and asked me
not to blame him if it’s one.
Since he’s outside the gate, he managed to get me to walk out, I took one and opened it and he acted very excitedly when he saw what was taken out from the green packet. I saw RM1.5Mil and pics of cars, etc.
He said I might be winning something and asked me to write down my full name and IC no.
He was showing me a newspaper cutting that he claimed was from Utusan and asked me if I read "Guang Ming Ri Bao". I saw a big page with winner with the similar RM1.5 mil and pics of cars, etc. He congratulated me and said if I win a big prize, he will get a RM2000
bonus and asked me to immediately call a number that is blurry written on a piece of card board. He said he needed me to talk to his boss to confirm that I am actually a legal customer.
He also asked me several times if my name and IC no was accurate and if I was fine if my name and IC no are both published in newspaper just like the one he showed me.
I asked him which company he’s from and he showed me a chop on the stack of invoice he’s holding, if I remember correctly it was printed "Penzone" or something like that.
I told him I couldn’t find my handphone and asked him to give me the number so I’ll call later. He didn’t but suggested that I borrow a phone from my neighbor. I asked him to call his boss using his phone. Surprisingly his phone ran out of credit and he said
he would have called his boss himself if he had credit. From this point, I knew I needed to be on my guard.
Then he started to jump and begged me to call. He was asking if I was afraid that he’s trying to con me. He said his RM2000 bonus is a lot of money to him.
Feeling tired, I told him that I am not interested anymore and since he knows where I live, if I win, just send the prize here. He showed signs of disappointment and sat outside the gate for a few minutes. My neighbors (Malay) were outside and I wondered why he didn’t approach him. Was it because he could only speak mandarin? Or was it because I look like an easy prey.
I don’t really know what he’s up to but I am sure it’s something no good. Maybe you can tell me? I just know that he’s trying to get my IC number, my full name and also my hand phone number. I wrote a fake IC number and he didn’t manage to get my number. Somehow
I felt that I still could very easily fall into his plans.
Please be careful and I hope you will forward to as many people you know as possible. Looking at such incident as 3rd party, we have a clear picture but when you are the party involved, we somehow won’t have such a clear mind as we wished.
You can call me if you want to know more.
Marcus.
